Suggested Talking Points

You do not have to use all of these. Pick the ones that apply to your situation.

Property taxes are rising faster than incomes

  • •Many Jasper County homeowners are on fixed incomes.
  • •Assessment increases are outpacing wages and Social Security adjustments.
  • •People who paid off their homes are being taxed out of them.

Reform should protect homeowners, not just shift the burden

  • •Any reform must include meaningful caps on assessment increases.
  • •Exemptions for seniors and disabled residents should be strengthened.
  • •Transparency in the assessment process must improve.

Local government accountability

  • •Taxing districts should be required to hold public hearings before raising levies.
  • •Voters should have a direct say when property tax revenue increases beyond a set threshold.

Tips for Effective Testimony

Keep it personal. Tell your own story — how rising property taxes have affected you or your neighbors. Be specific. Use numbers if you have them. Be respectful. The committee members are more likely to listen if you are calm and factual. Be brief. Written testimony can be longer, but oral testimony should be focused.
